THIS IS NOT A FAIRY TALE.

It's prom night. Samantha Kearns is eagerly awaiting her date's arrival. Except now her date is running late and Samantha fears he may not show.

Convinced there must be an explanation, Samantha's mother Tammy sends her husband John out to search for their Princess's prince.

John obeys, for he knows the horror that lies ahead if he fails to find the boy...

A twisted tale that combines elements of such classics as Psycho and Carrie, "Princess" will drag you into a world of madness, depravity, and murder.

This story also appears in WARPED A Collection of Short Horror, Thriller, and Suspense Fiction.

As a music reviewer, I more or less don't spend the time to take down a full on review about a short story, or any other book I read for that matter. However, this one caught my peaked interest within the first few paragraphs. LOVER of psych-thrillers, and an author of such books myself, I yearn to see authors with the same passion.

Menapace worked these precise details that I love to see so much in his 47 page for Kindle edition of "Princess." I love how the cover is deceiving to what lies within these pages. A psychotic wife, a tripped out daughter, a bends-to-their will father/husband... well, the characters alone help wrap the story together.

It's prom night; her date is late. Mommy dearest is helping her get ready because she's running late, too. Daddy is helping the best way he knows how... out looking for her date. We all remember that once in a lifetime night. The lights, the music, our friends (our enemies), all of us lined up to see who is going to be the next prom queen and king. Chaperones everywhere, but we all didn't care. We all didn't care that they were there.

My favorite line that I get from this, "Don't worry Princess. Daddy will take care of it."

Definite fast read and a great short ending. Simplified, and yet horrifying.

What a great book! Very intriguing. I definitely recommend this book! It's a short story, but very well, very well written.I love it.
Incredibly creepy and a little nauseating. Actually, it was pretty much horrifying considering that everything discussed in this short-fiction could be featured on a true-crime television show.

In truth I'm not even sure how to wrap my mind around this story. What happens when someone you care about just snaps? Not to mention this person you care about is already kind of scary, and you're too deep in the mess to get yourself out anyway. So you keep on keeping on, doing insane things for the happiness of an insane person.

Then it all hits the fan.

A must read for psychological thriller fans.
I like this type of story, in fact, as an author, I have written these type of stories myself.

I greatly enjoyed reading this--and will undoubtedly buy some more books from this author.

I thought it was a highly original idea. I have never read anything like it before. Good character and plot/story development, also well paced. Excellent writing.

I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but there are a couple of things I would like to call to the author's attention.

#1. If John took the kid's car--just how did John get to the mall? It was not close enough to walk, and it did not seem likely that he had bus or taxi service. I would therefore, conclude that John drove his own car there. So just how did he plan to retrieve his own car?
#2. And how did he plan on getting rid of the kid's car--and the other cars that he may have accumulated over the years?

Given the ending of the story, this does not become a problem--but these little details can sometimes trip an author up; and are things for which he needs to watch.

Other than that, however, this is a top-notch thriller, and I would highly recommend it.
It’s prom night and for John Kearns, that means the same thing it has meant every year for the past five years. First, he has to find his daughter, Samantha, a date. Then he has to shoot him with a taser, inject him with tranquilizer and toss him in the trunk. But after so many years, John is a seasoned pro. For starters, it’s much easier if the boy dresses himself after he comes to rather than trying to stuff dead weight into the often ill-fitting relic-of-a-tux. Also, nobody ever comes looking for the boy after the fact, so it’s easier to toss the body in the wood than it is to spend all that time digging a hole. It just makes more sense. There are so many more important things John needs to spend his time on; no sense wasting it on battles he needn’t fight. Speak of the devil, his beautiful wife, Tammy, is calling him now.

Jeff Menapace takes you on a psychological thrill ride you won’t soon forget. His fast-paced, intricate narrative will have you hoping what you know is about to happen, doesn’t. This may be a short story but Menapace’s creative use of dialogue will ensure that the sound of Samantha’s voice won’t be leaving your head any time soon.
This is a story of madness. Each page seems to sink the story further and further into the realm of insanity. The author tells the story in a way that lets you know how it came to be without actually just laying it out for you. You find the clues and you figure it out, all the while feeling a little sick to your stomach.

That's really all I have to say about the book. It is an excellent, very well-written, short story that tells the story of a family's descent into madness. If that is your type of story, this book is for you.

    I highly recommend it
When I began reading this story, I am not sure that I was as prepared for the craziness of the mother. Nevertheless, I forged through, hoping for some redemptive qualities in the husband. I must say that I was hoping for a little more background information about the daughter, Samantha. Initially, (early part of book) I wondered if 'Samantha' ever existed or if her mom was living out the life of a teenager that was denied her. However, as I continued reading, the circumstances surrounding Samantha's death were revealed; this gave way to the subservient husband's revelation about what he is/was/has been doing since his daughter's death. Not able to solve the problem (his wife) for years, he finally becomes more of a leader--a man--and ends the cycle of abuse that his daughter, before her demise suffered, as well as the abuse he is currently enduring.
For the price (.99), any holder should give it a try. It's okay; if you are expecting a work of staggering genius, then this is not the book for you. If you are a psychology, sociology, or social work major, this is a book you should consider reading. Though not great, the condemnation/bullying by parents and friends is a current society issue.
